Munich

In Munich exclusive shopping, fashionable streets and monumental buildings co-exist with lederhosen, brass music and rustic beer halls. Visitors can start their day in a simple bar with knuckle of pork and sauerkraut, and end it in a gourmet temple with white linen tablecloths. Moreover, Germany’s most cheerful residents live here. But you have no doubt already discovered that.

Munich City

It is said that the most contented citizens in Germany live in and around Munich. If this is correct, the city’s fifth season - the October festival - must be one of the reasons. The largest popular festivity in the world makes an early start in September and attracts millions of people from throughout the world. The residents of Munich erect large tents on Theresienwiese, fill them with music, food and drink and… enjoy life!

Munich was founded with the Munich Monastery in 1158. Later the oldest German food law was passed here, and it is still is use today - the beer purity law (1506).

A good place to start out for a walk in the city today is Schwabing, a traditional area known for its many Kneipen (pubs) and night spots. A lot of students live here as the University is only a stone’s throw away.

Nymphenburg is dominated by the castle and is rather distinguished, while Haidhausen, a district full of culture and art, is also becoming increasingly popular as a residential area. Visitors can find many of the finest churches (the cathedral among others) and the castle in the old city centre.

The green lung - Englischer Garten the English Garden) - is a park of 3.7 square kilometres in the middle of the city. The Englischer Garten borders the River Isar and is very popular among joggers, sunbathers and people who just want to stroll or have a picnic.

shopping

Shopping in Munich

The most popular shopping route runs along the pedestrianised Neuhauser Strasse/Kaufinger Strasse, which extends from Stachus to Marienplatz. You’ll find the department stores Karstadt and Kaufhof here, and a range of small shops selling jewellery, accessories, technology (Saturn) and clothes (H&M, C&A and Zero for example).

If you are looking for something more exclusive visit the clothes shops Hirmer and Ludwig Beck. If you continue from Marienplatz towards Sendlinger Strasse you will arrive at another temple of designer clothing: Konen. Opposite is Sportscheck, the largest sports shop on several floors.

You can find very exclusive shops in the area north of Marienplats and the City Hall. We’ll start on Dienerstrasse. This is where Alois Dallmayr is located: a delicatessen with a restaurant and a café. There are countless types of coffee, chocolates and liqueurs here, and anything else that is edible. Lodenfrey, which gives the impression of having at least one sales assistant per customer and which specialises in loden coats, national costume and designer fashion, is enthroned on Maffeistrasse.

Eduard Meier is the oldest shoemakers’ in Germany (1596) and has a Royal licence. The shop is to be found on Residenzstrasse 22. Theatinerstrasse and Maximilian-strasse are other streets for exclusive fashion, furnishings or jewellery. Finally, the market on Viktualienmarkt is a delight for all the senses. Delicatessen stalls with everything from cheese and fish to game and beef. You can eat Haxe or a sausage in simple cafés and butcher’s shops.
